From 8th to 13th November, 1917, 19th London battalion of 141 Brigade, 47th Division, were in the front line at Oppy near Arras which at that time was a relatively quiet sector. Thomas Broad was killed on 13th November but the battalion diary provides no further information about his death. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries. |
